Culture returns to Beniel thousands of historical documents that it kept in the General Archive of the Region (19/02/2018)

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment returns to Beniel City Council thousands of historical documents that it kept since 2009 in the General Archive of the Region.

The General Director of Cultural Assets, Juan Antonio Lorca, and the mayor of the town, María del Carmen Morales, participated in the ceremony.

A decade ago, from the General Archive, the possibility was offered to the City Council to keep documents with an antiquity of more than 25 years (since 1825) in deposit until the proceedings in the Municipal Archive of Beniel were completed and, since then, , remained in this regional space that, as Lorca recalled, "is available to all municipalities that need it for the realization of any consultation or action on the correct conservation or recovery of our important documentary heritage, especially for those smaller municipalities that do not have the necessary resources. "

In addition to safekeeping and keeping the documents in the best conditions, added the direct general, "the technicians of the General Archive organized and cataloged all the deposited material, which will allow their consultation in better conditions".

It is a total of 357 boxes, which will return to Beniel, following the authorization of an adequate space and the start-up of the analysis, design and recovery project of the Municipal Archive of the town.

Among the documents are numerous funds of the City of Beniel as minutes, documents on elections, on associations and institutions, health, education, culture, etc, as well as others belonging to the judicial fund and historical photographs of the municipality.

The headquarters building of the General Archive of the Region currently contains documents from both the Autonomous Community and the General State Administration in the Region and from different municipalities, and also custody of disappeared entities such as the Provincial Council.

In total, there are around ten million documents and photographs that are preserved in more than 80 kilometers of shelves.

Lorca stressed that "it is a modern building whose excellent environmental and safety conditions, in addition to the proper treatment applied to documents, have led numerous institutions and individuals to deposit their funds, making it an important institution for our Region, which allows the conservation and consultation of our heritage and our history by all interested citizens, both in the building itself and through its website, in which there is a large number of digitized documents.
